WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL (in France) |
Poland, New Zealand and Finland started the meeting as favourites to qualify and ended in the top 3 positions at the end to move into the Semi Finals, which take place 4 weeks from now. Kryznowek was in fine form for the Poles and was ably backed by Irzyk as they look to defend the title they won last season. Both Moore and Chong scored double figures for New Zealand, who seemed unconcerned by the absence of the injured Bart Williamson, whilst Helinen led the way for Finland. Scotland, runners-up overall last season, were surprise non-qualifiers as Treadwell didn't get enough support early on and reserve Briggs was used too late to give them the point required for a highest scoring 4th place spot. Blanc led France well on home shale but they didn't have enough strength to challenge for a place in the next stage whilst the Netherlands, despite the best efforts of Zevenbergen, and Brazil were never in the running. |

WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL (in Croatia) |
Former winners Russia and Englands both qualified with some ease as they turned in classic pairs displays with heavy contributions from both riders in each case. The Czech Republic sealed the other automatic qualification place with Nemecek leading the way for them on 14 points. Croatia were the side in 4th, led well by the evergreen Petkovic, who were quickly checking the other results before celebrating when they found their 20 point haul was enough for a place in the Semi Finals. Germany, like Scotland rostrum finishers overall last season and now also like Scotland out of the competition at the first hurdle this time round, had a little misfortune with bike problems for Juttke and an early exclusion for Manzbach costing them points. Cazares was impressive for Spain but had little in the way of support while Latvia were well short of the pace. |

WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL (in Romania) |
Sweden, with Svensson scoring an unbeaten 16+2 haul, and Norway, led by Thoresen, cruised through as most expected they would to take their places in the next round. Host nation Romania made the most of their home advantage with a shock display, led by Draghu but well backed by Luntraru, to score 19 points and beat Italy in a run-off for the final rostrum place. Italy, with Innacone impressive in totalling 14 points, recovered quickly from their disappointment when it was confirmed their 19 point total was enough to see them through as one of the highest scoring 4th place sides. The story for Canada was one of what might have been with both missing leading riders through injury - Struthers for Canada and Fekete for Hungary. The Canadian pairing were solid but fell 4 points short while Hungary were never in the running at all. Alan Connor was very impressive in scoring 10 for Ireland but partner McCurdy couldn't offer consistent support and their chances quickly faded after a positive start. |

WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL (in Slovakia) |
No real surprises in this one with Denmark, thanks for a fine team display, Australia, superbly led by Irwin, and America, both riders scoring double figure contributions, all cruised through with room to spare. The experience Petr Verner did well for Slovenia but, as has so often been the case, didn't have enough support for his nation to make progress. Host nation Slovakia has some misfortune when Zvara fell and withdrew from the meeting after taking a knock, although reserve Strececz came in and did well but they only provided one heat winner which cost them in the end. Wales battled gamely but lacked a heavy hitter whilst Bulgaria were generally well off the pace. |
